Considering an In-Ground Pool? 7 Things You Gotta Know

Having a swimming pool in your backyard can be heaven-on-earth during the summer months. If you’re ready to take the plunge, here’s 7 key things to consider before taking the plunge:

1. PRICE

The price is often the most important factor to consider when it comes to such a decision. The prices in North Carolina range between $25,000 and $100,000, and even though construction labour here is cheaper than the national average, the final estimate can vary greatly.

The price for concrete swimming pools in the area, for instance, starts at $30,000 – vinyl in-ground pools are a cheaper alternative, and if you want to reduce your costs, you can also opt for self-installation. Just bear in mind that according to the law, if your pool is valued at more than $30,000, you must hire a licensed pool contractor.

2. TYPE

As already mentioned, the type of in ground pool you choose will largely determine the price. There are three types of pools – vinyl, concrete and fiberglass – and in order to find the one that best suits your needs, you need to consider what your desired end result is.

Vinyl liner and concrete pools are generally best if you want to customize the shape. If you’re not into extensive maintenance and are looking for a long-lasting option, consider a fiberglass pool – they are extremely easy to take care of and rarely require any major work to be done following the installation.

The fiberglass pools is installed after the construction crew digs a hole in the ground, lays the plumbing, adds sand filler and lowers the pre-formed structure into the ground. The pool will usually be surrounded by a concrete deck structure. When installing a vinyl pool, the construction crew will assemble the frame – which can be made of metal, plastic or wood – around the hole’s perimeter. Due to the specific features of the material, the liner would need to be replaced once every 10 years or so.

3. TIME

Many people start thinking about getting an in-ground pool during the summer months but with the planning and construction stretching over months, you might actually start enjoying your pool well after the season is over. The time it will take to construct the pool will depend on the size and complexity, as well as the amount of manpower you have at your disposal. Choosing a fiberglass pool might be the best option if you’re looking for a quick solution – these pools can be installed in only a few days.

4. HIDDEN COSTS

The price of the in ground pool installation will be around half of what you will usually pay. Consider costs such as landscaping, lighting, fencing and pool toys, and don’t forget maintenance. If you don’t want to commit to maintenance yourself, you will need to hire help.

5. VALUE

It’s not always the case that the amount you spend on your pool will increase your home’s value by the same amount. This is due to the fact that not every buyer is looking for a house with a pool. In fact, the only people that will be interested in your property will be people specifically looking for a house with a pool – and they are limited in number.

Consider how much time you plan on living in your current home. If you’re thinking of moving away in the next two years or so, don’t bother.

6. SIZE

An in-ground pool should complement the appearance of your home, rather than eliminate your entire lawn area. Consider the size of your lawn and take your time to choose the perfect shape and size – this is a decision that will last forever.

7. SAFETY

This is especially important if you have kids – spend some money and build a childproof fence around the pool. In some areas a 4 foot fence surround is required so check with your local municipal authority. Some other precautions you should take are avoiding dark decking materials and colours since they absorb the heat and can be dangerous during the summer months. Also, steer clear of decking styles that become slippery when wet, as they can cause accidents.
